Ketamine-Assisted Therapy FAQs & Process
As an Integrative Healing Clinic, The ATT Center now offers the promising treatment modality of Ketamine Assisted Therapy (KAT). Our Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Providers (PATP) undergo intensive training in which programs meet rigorous requirements, ensuring the effective, ethical, safe and moral practice of Ketamine Assisted Therapy.
Provider Training
-
Our Clinical Director completed an 11 month long training through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute and is certified to provide services through the Spiritual Competency Academy (SCA). The SCA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education to providers. This training works in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) which is an organization that has been providing industry leading research in the field of psychedelics since 1986. This training provides 250 continuing education credit hours along with two full intensive learning weekends and an experiential retreat where trainees experience the medicine for themselves and are able to practice their skills with other providers in training.
-
Our KAT therapists received training through Alchemy’s seven week Ketamine Therapy Provider Training. This training provides 35 hours of continuing education credit and is also sponsored by the Spiritual Competency Academy. This training consists of fourteen required courses taught over the span of seven weeks, along with weekly lectures, discussions with a small cohort and a discussion forum with other learners and instructors. All courses require completion of all readings with accompanying coursework as well as a passing grade on related quizzes. In addition to this training, KAT therapists have completed direct clinical observation hours with an experienced PATP provider.

Our prescribers are Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioners who are board certified as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. They have completed 9 continuing education credit hours through the Elite NP’s Ketamine Infusion Clinic . The Elite Nurse Practitioner is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Our prescribers not only provide medical clearance and a prescription upon approval, but they are on site during all medicine sessions in order to medically monitor the vitals of our patients during treatment to ensure the safe practice of KAT.
We believe that anyone looking to utilize psychedelic-assisted therapy to address mental health issues do so with the guidance and support of an extensively trained provider from an accredited training program. It is our goal to establish an industry standard in which those providers meet rigorous training requirements in order to provide the safe, ethical, moral and effective practice of Ketamine Assisted Therapy.
DMN Modulation, Neuroplasticity, & More
Ketamine works to decrease the default mode network, which is our closest neural equivalent to the ego. With the conscious constraints of the constructed self dramatically reduced, Ketamine has the potential to release unconscious material that can be very powerful. Ketamine does decrease the filter of the self, but it simultaneously decreases the power of cortical awareness and this reduces the unpredictable wave of the unconscious material that is brought to experience. Traumatic experiences may be accessed, but the weight of the new insights are more limited.
As a dissociative agent, Ketamine disconnects most of our cortical awareness and can leave people with a powerful experience. This journey may be one of the most profound alterations of consciousness that you will ever experience but is also why we keep heavy importance on all of our patients completing proper preparation and integration sessions throughout your treatment.
Ketamine modifies the default mode network and enhances neuroplasticity. Quite simply it offers a new way of thinking, particularly about one’s own life and the big picture of our existence. People can come away with a refreshed look at their life journey and their options for change.
Ketamine has a clear dose response curve, so folks can dial in the type of experience they would like to have: mild, verbal and lightly dissociated; moderate, some verbal capacity, but mostly gone; high, non-verbal and totally disconnected.
The short half-life of ketamine is under 30 minutes. This means that the entire experience lasts less than one hour. Pleasurable or challenging, the journey is relatively short and manageable.
The alterations in the default mode network and hippocampal plasticity do linger for a day or so. This offers a practical window for enhanced psychotherapy. Low dose lozenges provide a twilight type of experience that enhances access to painful material and speeds psychotherapy. We tolerate the difficult insights better and can process our wounding at a much deeper level. Ego controls are reduced, but not gone. This catalyzes psychotherapeutic change. It is an anesthetic agent, but used in this manner it opens our process and does not numb. This is because it is dissociative and thus does not diminish our awareness.

Psychedelic comes from the Latin words for “mind manifesting”. Most of the classic psychedelics such as LSD, Peyote, Psilocybin, and Ayahuasca (DMT) work through common pathways in the brain which involve the serotonin receptors, (i.e. 5HT-2A). Ketamine is a disassociative anesthetic and works through the glutamate system. Leaders in the field agree that the use of ketamine in the doses used for KAT is truly “mind manifesting”, though certain characteristics of the experience are different. Ketamine provides a more introspective experience and we use eye shades and music to enhance the introspective nature of the experience.

Ketamine is a schedule III drug. Drugs in this class tend to have “very minimal potential for addiction”. However abusive and addictive behaviors with relation to the ketamine experience occur. The most common pattern is that there is a desire or preference to be in the ketamine state of awareness as opposed to our day-to-day reality. In KAT, access to the medication is strictly controlled. We monitor for behaviors that might indicate the emergence of dependence and actively guard against it.

Ketamine works on the brain's glutamate system, as does alcohol and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Many people report the initial feelings of Ketamine feel like a few glasses of wine or dental nitrous oxide. Another first thing clients notice is the "music becomes alive" and deeply felt.
Also, because we use rapidly dissolving tablets, the onset is very gentle. At the doses we use, clients maintain a "sense of agency", which is especially important for clients with trauma histories. It is very common to feel a dissociative effect when taking Ketamine. It is also possible to have very big psychedelic experiences while on Ketamine. Each individual’s response to Ketamine varies, but we are able to adjust the dosing amount to manage the intensity of the experience.

Because of its chemical properties ketamine is easy to administer using a number of different routes. In research settings it’s usually administered with an IV or IM. At The ATT Clinic, we use primarily sublingual ketamine in the form of rapidly dissolving tablet (RDT) lozenges. The RDTs are absorbed by the submucosal membranes of the mouth. Clients sit up in the treatment chair, dissolve the medicine in their mouth, and do the "psychedelic swish" for 10-15 minutes. The medicine is spit out into a cup, the chair reclined, and the journey begins.
The RDT experience has a wonderful experience curve, building slowly and steadily to peak experience and then gently curving back to a peaceful and gentle slow return. This slow return to ordinary consciousness is known as the "long tail" and is an incredibly therapeutic part of the experience.

Typically, clients start with six fully prepped and integrated KAT sessions over three weeks. After each KAT session we assess together how you are responding to treatment. It is typical for most people to complete 'booster' medicine appointments once a month for a few months, based on whether or not desired results have been achieved.
After these treatments, clients tend to shift into a "maintenance" phase of between one to three treatments per year. Treatments become part of their mental health and wellness regime, with each treatment providing an opportunity to catalyze deeper growth and resilience. -
Ketamine "plays nice" with most medical and psychiatric medications. The are a few exceptions which require a "day of" hold, like benzodiazepines, ADHD medications, or mood stabilizers like lamotrigine, which blunt the effect of ketamine.
Every client receives a full and complete medical intake and screening, which includes an analysis of your current medications. Your PMHNP will inform you of any medications which will need to be stopped or modified for treatment. -
Emotional and physical safety is our #1 concern. We currently only provide KAT sessions in our clinic so that you can be monitored for emotional and physical safety. Preparation and integration sessions with facilitating guides are done in person or via telehealth.
Our Process
-
Initial Consultation
During this 60 minute meeting we will conduct an intake assessment to include symptomatology, history and goals. We will utilize this information to explore whether KAT is a good fit for addressing your mental health needs.
-
Psychiatric Medical Intake
During this in-person or telehealth appointment you will meet with a trained medical doctor or nurse practioner to screen for any psychiatric or medical contraindications to ensure that KAT is safe for you.
-
Preparation Sessions
Before your initial medicine journey you will meet with your provider for no less than three 45 minute preparation sessions in which you will create a safe set and setting, learn about your own inner wisdom/healer, explore setting intentions for your journey and discuss how to handle possible difficult journeys.
-
Medicine Sessions
Over the course of three weeks you will experience six two-hour medicine sessions at two sessions a week. Medication is taken orally with the peak of non-ordinary, deep-mind consciousness typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is an inner-directed process, enhanced with eye shades and headphones. The remainder of time is spent preparing for your journey and allowing for a safe landing back into ordinary mind.
-
Integration Sessions
Once a week between the two medicine sessions you will have a 45 to 60 minute integration session in which you will process through your journey and explore ways in which it can influence lasting change. This is where learning and attaining impactful insights can occur.
-
Closing Session
After all sessions are completed there will be a final 45 minute closing session in which you complete a final processing and discuss transferring to another counselor who can continue working with you to address additional mental healthcare needs.
